How a Trip to Iceland Changed my Life

I never really liked to think of myself as “all talk”, but the truth is, I was. I would always say I wanted to go there and do that, but I’d never commit and always let my excuses, insecurities and anxieties keep me gated away in my comfort zone, far from the massive dreams I built for myself, but never thought would actually come true. I’d spend hours researching trips abroad and periodically convince myself I’d go to Iceland “some day”. It was always in the back of my mind and I never truly felt fulfilled because of it.

So, eventually, after having had enough of letting my self-deprivation and the knots in my stomach win, I finally got up the nerve to book a group tour to Iceland with an amazing company called Under 30 Experiences.

I didn’t know anyone going. I had only flown by myself once (which wasn’t actually by choice), but never internationally. Some days I didn’t even have the courage to take public transportation into New York City, just a 20 minute bus ride from my town. I wasn’t a risk taker. I wasn’t a doer, especially when It came to doing things alone.

But, two weeks before the departure date, I planned my PTO days, confirmed my spot on the trip I’d researched countless times and booked my flight. If not now, then when?

As I write this, I’m on my flight back home, having accomplished so much and taken so many amazing memories with me that will forever be etched in my mind. It was the best experience I have ever had in my life – and I really needed that.

Everything about Iceland is humbling and stunning. The vast plains, snow-topped volcanos, massive glaciers, wild horses, rushing waterfalls – they make you forget the trivial worries of everyday life and put the whole world back into perspective. I felt so small, but in the best way possible. A way that reminded me how much I have yet to see and do.

The group of 15 strangers I met along this journey became family in just five short days. Each, just like all the different waterfalls we explored together, is so beautiful in his and her own unique way and each brought their own special something to the trip that truly made it the experience it was.

I think what surprised me the most is how much I learned, not just about Icelandic history, but about myself – each adventure forced me to grow in different ways.

From our fearless leader and tour guide, Thor, I learned absolute patience and kindness. Throughout every missing person during headcounts on the bus, every silly question and every small hiccup, he was there with a gentle push, a listening ear and an outstretched hand. Those characteristics certainly don’t go unnoticed or under-appreciated, and I will keep striving to master them myself.

From each amazing waterfall, I learned that life can still be so beautiful even when it seems like it’s crashing down at your feet. Always keep moving forward and never take for granted the rainbows that appear when the sun does shine.

From scaling the side of a cave to get to a secret waterfall, I learned to always say yes to adventure even when your heart is beating out of your chest. That there’s so much more to be discovered if you just look under the surface and the journey to find it will always be worth it. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness or failure and taking the high road to new ground is better than tracing your steps backwards.

From hiking a glacier, I learned to trust yourself and a knowledgeable, helpful leader. Don’t just take the path less traveled to prove you can, but don’t automatically fall in line either. It’s absolutely necessary to have balance in life and confidence in your own steps forward.

From the geysers, I learned a watched pot does eventually boil, sometimes only when you’ve all but given up on it and the best surprises really are worth waiting for.

From group horseback riding, I learned that everyone takes life at their own pace and if you’re worried about being first or last, you miss out on the beauty of the ride.

From the epic sunset, I learned that absolutely nothing is as breathtaking and underrated as natural beauty. Magic does exist and even though some of the most amazing moments are fleeting, you can take them with you forever as memories when they pass.

From my new friends, I learned that no matter where you’re from, how old you are or what you do, common interests and a zest for adventure can bond you for life. I’m not alone and there are people out there who are looking for the same things out of life. Letting people in doesn’t have to be a scary thing – in fact, it can be the best thing.

There is literally nothing I won’t miss about this trip. It opened my eyes on so many levels and I feel so blessed to have been a part of it. I’ve pushed my limits, gotten outside of my comfort zone and truly feel I have gained my independence.

Thank you Under30Experience. Thank you to all my new friends. Thank you Iceland. You’ve changed my life.
